Tree work is fun work for this Danvers arborist
He recently was responsible for returning the milkmaid and reaper to the roof of the McIntire Tea House at Glen Magna, but most of the time, Arborist Dan Mayer is working with trees rather than statues.
"I was married at Glen Magna its such a great place," he says of one of the reasons he quickly agreed to the volunteer job. "I've done volunteer work before. It's a nice thing."
Mayer has an associate's degree in arboriculture, a bachelor's in forestry and is a certified arborist, which means he's an expert on trees. Behind the scenes-Dan Mayer, arborist and owner of Mayer Horticulture Services, sharpens the blade of a chain saw in his back shop on Andover Street before going out to join one of his crews working several different sites around the North Shore. "We do prunings, removals, cabling, bracing, planting anything to do with trees," he says of his company. "Five of us have our associate's and bachelor's [degrees]. You can call us a bunch of over-educated wood cutters. "It's hard work. You've got to love it."
